RED CAIN’s New Scorching Single “Firestarter” Takes Inspiration From Roleplaying Game “Elden Ring”

A year after their break-out third album, 2023’s “NÄE’BLISS”, which had its single “Fisher King” nominated by Calgary’s YYC Music Awards for “Metal Recording of The Year”, power prog storytellers RED CAIN return in 2024 with their first taste of new music.

Entitled “Firestarter”, this first single of 2024 is loosely based on the lore of the action role-playing game “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree”. The band spent a lot of their time this year playing this fantastic release. Elden Ring is not only a brilliant game and a visual masterpiece, but also a storytelling phenomenon that deliberately has lore gaps to let fans and players create their own stories and interpretations of the lore. This strongly resonates with Red Cain‘s approach as musicians, as they always write music for their fans to read in unique ways and weave into their mythology.

“Firestarter” is also a new statement for Red Cain, as they continue to embrace a modern sound and reinvent their songwriting. You will hear a lot more groove and synth backing on this one, along with the same anthemic hooks, technical riffs, and vocal layering they are known for.

The albums contained a ton of genre inspirations, from gothic rock to ambient electronica, power, black, and death metal, and were universally lauded for their inventiveness, variety, and strong conceptual content. They continue this momentum with forthcoming releases.

Kosto, a new crossover group of experienced artists, released their first single ‘Kipupiste’

Since 2021, matured in complete silence, Kosto is a band operating under the license of nu metal, which also often visits the side of punk and rap. The music is bold and sometimes threatening, reflecting the Finnish soul landscape.

The band made up of experienced musicians includes Jarno Hyökyvaara (vocals), who has made a career as a professional actor and as a soloist, Sami Selei (guitar) known from the band IA, Tino Jäntti, who worked in Vanguardian and as Wolfheart’s session and tour drummer, Ville Marttila (guitar) and Visu Uimonen (bass) whom are active in I Revolt. From the beginning, the band’s common thread has been that the sound comes from the players, not from the computer.

“The first version of the song “Kipupiste” was already created in the winter of 2019. Later, after receiving the lyrics, I realized that this requires a grooving band, not computers,” guitarist Sami Selei commented.

The band’s singer Jarno Hyökyvaara says that he wrote the song on the shower floor, after last year’s Tuska festival.

“The song deals with the Finnish mentality, where the central part is the idea of one’s own survival and loneliness, even if there are communities around,” says Hyökyvaara.

With the new song, Kosto heads to the concert stages. Currently on the desktop are the soon-to-be-released music video and next year’s debut EP.

Combining doom with symphonic elements, the seven-piece Infirmum will release their album on September 27th

Formed in early 2019, the Finnish Symphonic Doom Metal band INFIRMUM has approached the genre in a unique and complex way. With a sound that explores aspects of classical music combined with the traditional weight and melancholy of Doom, they released their debut album “Walls of Sorrow” in 2020, followed by the EP “The Great Unknown” in 2022. In January 2023, they released the single “Sleep of Reason,” which featured a music video. With the departure of vocalist Anna Rose in 2023, Brazilian singer Sabine Blodwin joined the band, bringing a new perspective from a different culture.

Today, INFIRMUM is preparing for the release of their new single “Burn,” scheduled for August 2024 as a preview of their upcoming album “From The Depths I Cried,” expected by the end of the year.

Watch the music video on YouTube:

https://youtu.be/7QFmLQ2g52c?si=ym7bTfPq5KH_79kL

“Burn is about everything that is controversial and burns inside the human soul, what we feel in secret, what people try to hide or extinguish to fit into society. In ‘Burn,’ while the male part exposes these feelings and unique visions of the world around, the female part represents the embracing of all these demons, the darkness as part of the human being, and this dark flame grows until it finally becomes one with the individual.” – Sabine

”Burn was fun to compose. Wanted to compose a bit faster song and I was in right mood so this turned out to be really good. It is always fantastic to notice how song evolves after I have sent just my guitar tracks and everyone begin to create their parts. Sometimes I delete some guitar leads so other instruments have more space. I am very happy with the results!”– Timo

”Burn was me trying to be more brutal than on other songs, very death metal lyrics” -Eliel

”When I first started to work on the drum parts for Burn, the demo had only Timo’s guitar tracks. But I could immediately hear that this song will be more aggressive and it needs to have a sense of danger. That’s what I aimed for with my drumming: danger alerting accents, tickling our primitive lizard brain with a sense of something bad looming around the corner, short machine gun like bursts of rhythm in kick drums etc. But also I wanted to keep our signature “beauty and the beast” dynamic present in the song, so I made some parts to have a more “flowy” feel for a nice contrast.”– Hanna-Leena

Listen to the single on music services (Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Tidal etc.): https://push.fm/fl/infirmum-burn

INFIRMUM’s music today can be described as profound and conflicted, exploring the darkest sides of human emotions, diving into the depths of madness, pain, sickness, and death, while still finding brief moments of hope, offering an atmospheric journey through the darkest corners of the human soul. Combining beauty and ferocity, their compositions are rich in textures and nuances with strong, reflective lyrics.

The current lineup includes Sabine Blodwin (formerly of Moonwitch, Draconian Opera, Pettalom) – Vocalist, Taka Eliel (Sanctuary of Hate) – Vocalist and Bassist, Erna Siikavirta (formerly in Lordi, Children of Bodom as session keyboardist, Sinergy as session keyboardist, Arthemesia and Deathlike Silence) – Keyboardist, Joonas Siikavirta (Begrim) – Guitarist, Timo Solonen (Grain of Pain) – Guitarist, Hanna-Leena “Hanska” (Mourning Wood) – Drummer, and Elya – Cellist.

Finnish metal band Rifftera is releasing a four song EP, called Coda, on October 11th, 2024.

Finnish metal band Rifftera is set to release their new EP Coda on October 11th 2024 via Inverse Records. The second single ‘Quicksand’ is released today with visualizer video. Quicksand is from the more melodic side of Rifftera’s repertoire, although it doesn’t avoid going into the band’s common heavy riffing either.

LISTEN to Quicksand here: https://push.fm/fl/rifftera-quicksand

Mikko Kuoppamaa, band’s guitarist and vocalist, gives some insight about the song;

“Quicksand is one of the few songs in which I have been involved heavily composing-wise and therefore it is an important song for me. The basic building blocks have been around for way too many years and now finally it has all the parts to form a fully functioning song – thanks to Janne (Hietala, band’s other guitarist & vocalist). I need to point out my own affection to Soilwork’s material from the early 2000’s. It’s possible to notice some nods to that direction from the verse and chorus of Quicksand.”

LISTEN to the first single No Turning Back: https://push.fm/fl/rifftera-no

BIOGRAPHY:
Rifftera was formed in 2010 in Vaasa, Finland by Janne Hietala. The band was basically started as a studio project; to be a channel for releasing riffs and song ideas that kept on coming. Janne had been playing in some bands and projects during the years but besides of a couple of demos in the early 2000’s none of this material had ever been heard outside rehearsals. So from the beginning the idea of Rifftera was basically just to get music released – in a form that it deserves.

Antti Pöntinen and Jupe Karhu shared a musical past with Janne, and after being asked, they decided to join this new band. First years of the band involved a lot of learning and skill honing in both song writing and recording areas.

In 2012 Mikko Kuoppamaa joined the band and eventually it lead to a situation where Mikko started to take care of band’s clean singing and Janne dealt with the screaming parts. Before Rifftera Mikko had been just singing some backup vocals and Janne had basically never been in front of the microphone so the only reason to share vocal duties this way was the fact that there weren’t nobody else around to do it. Luckily promising results started to show up and after a couple of demos band finally released its debut album, Pitch Black, on August 2015.

The band had no drummer before the year 2016, when Ville Härkönen joined the lineup (Thomas Tunkkari, an old friend and the drummer of Dark Sarah, played the drums on Pitch Black as a session drummer and the demo-era was dealt with programmed drums). With Ville Rifftera started to work with the second album, Across the Acheron, that eventually ended up to be released on January 2019.

After some silent years, a four song EP named Coda was set up for release in 2024.

SANDVEISS Introduces New Album “Standing in the Fire” With Two Powerful Singles “I’ll Be Rising” And “No Love Here”

Sandveiss is a heavy rock band from Quebec City that came to life in 2011. Their music is heavy yet also melodic. On a songwriting level, they like to go to “different places” on the same album, and each time pushing things a little further towards new directions while staying true to what they really are. This is exemplified on the first two singles off their upcoming album “Standing in the Fire”, which comes out on October 11, 2024, from Folivora Records. The singles “I’ll Be Rising” and “No Love Here” paint a juxtaposed image of the band, Vocalist/guitarist Luc Bourgeois comments on the latter:

“I guess that the song “No Love Here” isn’t a typical single due to its longer and unconventional structure, but we wanted to release singles that represent different moods of the album. This track clearly demonstrates the band’s prog-rock influences, both in its musical arrangements and in its sounds and textures. Regarding the lyrics, I rarely write about light subjects, and this one is no exception: I wrote it as a reaction to the alarming and horrific rise in domestic violence and femicide, especially during the pandemic. Not one more.”

“No Love Here” is the most prog-rock song on the record. The longest one, the more “developed” and unpredictable in terms of structure and sound. “I’ll Be Rising” uses a blend of heavy riffing, melodic parts, and somewhat unusual time signatures for the band. It gives the song a proggier feel but still has a lot of their more “usual elements”. A good balance between what they’ve always been and what’s new. Lyrically, it’s a song about resilience, justice, and empowerment from the perspective of a survivor of rape and abuse. Anxiety, shame, depression, and the fear of not being believed.

Sandveiss likes to guide the listener through different kinds of emotions on the same album while of course trying to maintain a certain level of coherence and continuity. A bit like different chapters of the same book. Even the singles were chosen to demonstrate different sides of the album and different moods. It is recommended for fans of Black Sabbath, Mastodon, and The Sword.
