Dreamtale have been on the metal scene since 1999, their first three albums were released via Spinefarm between 2002 and 2005, winning listeners from Finland to Japan. Notable collaborators include names like Marko Hietala, Jarkko Ahola and Timo Tolkki. In 2019 the band refreshed their sound with the addition of a second singer, Nitte Valo (ex-Battle Beast). After the release of their latest album “Everlasting Flame” in 2022 they tried out for the UMK pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Battleheart”, and are now preparing to release a new full length. Our reporter Cristina had the chance to meet the band before their tour in China and find out more about the line-up changes, their music and much more
Hi guys how are you doing?
All: We are fine, thank you for asking.
You were great tonight; how do you feel about this gig?
Rami: Thank you, we had a good time and feeling great right now! It went really fast even if we played almost 2 hours.
Nitte: We gave it all. It was warm, it was full, it was a really great feeling being on the stage.
Dreamtale was founded in 1999, since then the lineup has undergone several changes, especially regarding the singers, because at the beginning there was only one singer and now there are two…
Rami: I actually had the idea for a long time that there would be a male and female singer in the band. I already tried to propose it to Seppänen, but it did not take off. Now it was time to do it. This was immediately clear after Erkki and Seppo left the band.
Did you already know you wanted Nitte as singer?
Rami: No, but the same night we got in touch I knew she was the right one.
Nitte: Years ago, you placed an ad for a group in a musician’s webpage that I responded to but at the time it did not happen anything.
Rami: Yes, I contacted you for another band where we needed a female singer. As for Dreamtale, we got in contact that same evening, it probably did not take more than ten minutes from the time the ad was posted that she sent a message.

And this was in 2019, right?
Rami: Yes, it probably was 2019.
And with Jarno?
Jarno: So, it started with the fact that we had the same drummer in our bands for many years. In a way, it was very easy to approach Rami and send a message that I was interested in joining the band, also because we had already shared a rehearsal space for many years.
Rami: Of course, we first took the demos of the singers and all the others. When the demos were listened to and checked to see what sounds would work, it was clear that Jarno’s voice works great on our songs. And then Nitte and Jarno’s voices are incomprehensibly similar in certain frequencies, that when they sing at a certain high note, they are no longer separated from there.
Jarno: And then, on top of that, probably the fact that Nitte and I had known each other for years. We had been at Maiden Fest for many years.
Nitte: Yeah, singing Iron Maiden songs. So, at Maiden Fest, there were three Dreamtale singers singing at the same time.
Jarno: True! Erkki, Nitte and me.
Akseli: I also played at Maiden Fest, probably in 2020.
Nitte: And indeed, there is still such a funny photo of us from many years ago, where Jarno, me and Erkki are in the same photo, not knowing what each other’s fate is. I think it is kind of funny.

“Everlasting Flame” was released in 2022. Are you working on a new album or what is going on at the moment?
Rami: Yes, it is almost ready. It was just put aside because of other activities and to be honest I have not really felt like working on the album. But now it is almost done, the recordings have been made…
Jarno: The new songs are damn good. I like them even better than the ones from “Everlasting Flames” that I actually love.
Nitte: There are some fucking difficult songs on this new album, vocal-wise this new record is very difficult.
Jarno: I will probably never be able to pull them off live (EN. Laughs).
Nitte: But the new songs are difficult vocally, although you can tell that neither of us are bad singers. Now, it is really such a record that you have to work hard on it, which is a really good thing. Rami, you have made songs with such high pitches thinking we could sing.
Rami: Sorry guys! I always try to think of them in tune, so that they stay in tune with both of your voices.
Rami, do you write all the songs? Or how does it work in your band?
Rami: 90 percent maybe…
Jarno: Yes, Rami is the main composer and sometimes he also listens to our opinions on the songs.
You tried to enter UMK (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu). Why did you decide to apply for this contest?
Rami: Yes, we thought why not give it a try, there was nothing to lose and if we could get through it would be really nice and a great PR thing.
Are you planning to try to enter the UMK contest again or not?
Rami: I do not know. It is not the kind of thing we plan. If a suitable idea comes along, why not?!
What is your favorite Dreamtale’s song to play live?
Rami: I do not know. At least it is hard for me to say which are my favorite songs, there are so many.
All?
Rami: Not all of them, many are nice to play. We have over a hundred songs and in the set, there is always room for a little change, so we do not find ourselves playing the same songs over and over again.
Akseli: For me it is “October is mine”, with this song the party starts.
Jarno: Yeah, it is hard to choose. I would say “World’s Child”, I do not know what it is, but maybe the melody and everything. I just like singing it.
Nitte: I cannot agree. But the difference here is that not all the old songs work for me. There is really a lot of work behind to make the various parts work between our voices on the old songs. Dreamtale has always had a male singer and this probably reflects in the fact that we have very different favorite songs, I am not saying that they are not good but the fact that I do not feel them as mine.
Akseli: It is great for Dreamtale that Rami writes such different songs that there is something for everyone. We are not the typical power metal band that does that basic dragon slayer mood, that always starts hard, but in our music, you can find different moods.
Rami: Maybe it is because my musical taste is so broad, that I listen to so many different genres, that I do not want to make music that is boring to me.
Jarno: It is about melody…
Rami: Yes, exactly! Since my childhood I always thought that the melody is the most important part. It does not matter what kind of music it is, whether it is Finnish rock or disco humppa from the 80s, if the melody works it works.
You said you listen to different music; can you give us some examples? For example, what did you listen to today or yesterday?
Rami: What I am listening to lately is some Finnish pop and Euro-pop but as I said the genre does not really matter. Sometimes I listen to some good old power metal like Helloween.
Jarno: I do not really listen to much music these days. I can drive a car for ten hours during a normal work day and listen to a little bit of radio. But then if we have a gig in the evening, I practice with the songs from the set for two or three hours, after which I need silence, sometimes I talk on the phone with a friend. So, there is background music in general, but I do not listen to music these days.
Akseli: Same thing for me. The fact that I joined the band at the age of 16, at the time I had Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius and then Dreamtale. In 2006 there was an online ad looking for musicians and they were specifically for Dreamtale. I remember thinking “shall I give it a try?”, I asked a friend of mine who encouraged me to apply and I joined the band.
But now I have a story for you, I met Akseli in 2006 through MySpace and we were talking about music…
Akseli: Yes, I linked you a video of Dreamtale.
That is right, you told me that it is your favorite band.
Akseli: And here I am in the band.
What are you listening to, Nitte?
Nitte: I also listen to very little music in general, but if I have to mention one band then I would say Nightwish. And also, of course, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius and all these bands that I have listened to since I was a little girl. Nowadays Beast in Black is one of my favorite bands.
Akseli: It is also the best band for me at the moment.
Nitte: With Akseli we have the same taste in music.
Akseli: Especially when it comes to Nightwish.
Nitte: Speaking of Nightwish, since I have always been a fan of theirs, I had the honor to go on tour with them, which was a really incredible experience. But what I think is really incredible is the song “Farewell” that I first heard many years ago on Klaus Flaming’s Metalliliitto, I recorded it on a cassette, and listening to it I thought; what a badass band this is, a damn loud song, and this woman sings so well that I wish I could sing it someday. And here I am now singing it. The fact that I had these two fantastic opportunities is like winning the lottery for me.
This is amazing!
Jarno: I have a similar story about how I got to know Dreamtale, the song was “The Mirror” sung by Jarkko Ahola. It was my first contact with the band. This song has never been performed live, but maybe at some point.
Nitte: Can I show you something?
Of course!
Nitte: I have this amazing bag here. This is a Dreamtale bag. It was made by Jarnon Laukkupaja, and he wanted to make a Dreamtale bag like that. There is only one of these out there at the moment. I am not selling it, so it is nothing, but I also want to advertise. I think it is amazing. I will take it with me to China.

Rami: What is this picture?
Nitte: Well, this is us.
Akseli: This is a drawing made by a grateful fan.
Nitte: Yeah, and I wanted that on purpose because I think this is an image that resembles me, it’s so fun and playful and then over here there is the Battleheart. I feel privileged to have such great friends.

You said you are going to China. Is this tour planned for next week?
All: Yes.
And it is supposed to have six shows, but I heard there are problems with a couple of places…
Rami: Well, yes. Stories are to be lived and here now you do not really know what to expect.
Akseli: It depends a lot on the Chinese government. And it is up to the bureaucracy how these shows are realized. I think all six shows will take place. With the licenses it takes a while.
Rami: And then you have to have permission to go to all the cities to be able to perform.
Jarno: And you need permission at the concert venues.
Rami: True, for the concert venues you need permission even if it is in the same city.
Have you ever been to China before?
Rami: Yes, in 2017 and we did 6 shows then too.
What is it like to play there? If you compare it to Finland for example, what are the differences?
Akseli: A very passionate audience. They live for the music from start to finish.
Rami: “The Dawn” is a big deal there, in 2017 when we were there a lot of people cried during that song.
Jarno: I have not experienced it myself yet, but I will soon. I expect people to take all the songs with joy, because Dreamtale is first and foremost a band of joy, if I may say so.
Akseli: Sympathetic power metal.
What about other concerts around Europe? Is that possible?
Akseli: We would like to tour in Europe, but we need to find contacts. So, if you want us to play, contact us.
Rami: It is hard to find promoters who organize tours.
Akseli: There is a lot of potential here. Sonata Arctica is touring, Stratotvarius is touring, why not getting also Dreamtale on tour? Take Dreamtale on tour!
We are at the end of this interview, thank for your time, would you like to tell something to your fans and people reading this interview?
Jarno: Listen on YouTube instead of Spotify.
Nitte: Thank you, and thank you to the people who follow, listen and stick around. Despite all the twists and turns. Now it is time for karaoke.
All: “Can you feel the love tonight? Can you feel the love tonight? Where we are? It’s enough to make kings and vagabonds Believe the very best”.
Rami: Thank you!

Italian progressive post-rockers STRANIA have unleashed their new single ‘Metempsychosis’, featuring Mattia Braghero as guest vocalist. The single is taken from the band’s upcoming debut album “Acceptance”, out later this Fall via Diotima Records.
The band shared:
“Metempsychosis is a song that tells the story of an old man who ventures into the woods to reunite with Mother Nature in his final moments, allowing her to take care of his body and soul. As he walks deeper into the forest, he feels observed by the surrounding trees, which are the reincarnations of those who, like him, sought final peace in that place.”

METEMPSYCHOSIS – lyrics:
I am too old
To wake once more
My life was long
I’ve come to rest
In your green chest
Mighty forest
Open your arms
Show me the path
To reach your heart
Those who died
In this place
Found a new home
For their soul
My spirit
Is a seed
From the ground
Trees will grow
They breath they breath
Like human beings
Their bark’s moving
They see they see
They’re watching me
Walking dying
It lives they live
This place the trees
Surrounding me
In this magic place
Now i see her face
She is everywhere
Mother please take care
Of my worn out body
Of my broken bones
You’ll turn them into new
Trees, life must go on
Currently, the production of the first album, “Acceptance” has been completed, independently produced at Giacomo Salani’s “La Fucina” recording studio in Empoli (FI). The album consists of five songs, composed between 2021 and 2023, recorded in collaboration with four different singers external to the project.
Further news on STRANIA’s activities will be revealed in the coming weeks!
More information:
STRANIA is an Italian progressive post-rock band, formed in the province of Florence by Andrea Borgioli, Mattia Nicolini and Giacomo Bracci in the summer of 2019. The band reached its current four-piece lineup in late summer 2022.
The members of the band have a very heterogeneous musical culture, but the meeting point between them is highlighted in the post-rock genre, which leaves a lot of expressive and compositional freedom to the group. In fact, all the songs are composed in a collective creative process in the rehearsal room, which can sometimes even last whole day sessions, taking care of the smallest detail.
Current lineup:
– Andrea Borgioli, guitar;
– Mattia Nicolini, guitar;
– Giacomo Bracci, drums;
– Jacopo D’Arpino, bass.

Helsinki-based doom metal band Denigrate releases their fourth full length album titled To the Goddess Unknown on November 29th 2024 via Inverse Records. Now they have released the second single single The Apparition of One from the upcoming album. The song includes the very first tunes of this set of compositions. Mood and speedwise the song is on the higher range on Denigrate’s standard of recent compositions. Lyrically the song hopelessly yearns the unity of two, whether it be in crime or in balance.

Since Denigrate was found back in ’96, the inevitable vibe of the band was to be dark, melancholy, tormented, observative.
The quantity of albums released is really not the thing in this band. From the first released album in 2003 to the latest 4th one in 2024 called “To The Goddess Unknown”, decades has changed and so has the band.
After no more than three albums released, after big-time local momentum with a finnish cover song, after mandatory hiatus, after some line-up changes, Denigrate 2024 introduces their absolutely greatest masterpiece to date and shows what only truely experienced bunch of members can achieve.

Phoboian is a melodic death metal orchestra from Turku, Finland. The band’s music incorporates classical female vocals into heavy nordic melancholy. Phoboian was established in 2017 during an after party to a metal gig, and since has gathered six musicians to its ranks: singers Inka Laitinen and Eeva Korhonen, drummer Kristo Rautavuori, bassist Jonathan Åkerman, and guitarists Olli Kuure and Otso Turunen. After a long silence Phoboian is ready to release “The Plague”, the first single from its upcoming album.

“The Plague” tells about the extinction of mankind as a result of a deadly pandemic. It brings together medieval religious imagery and a modern scientific dystopia. Despite the macabre theme the song strives for beauty, and isn’t as much a prophecy as a warning.
-Otso Turunen
“One of my favorite tracks from the upcoming album is definitely ‘The Plague,’ which harmonies and rhythms create an atmosphere that’s great to rock out to. Together with the guys and Eeva, we’ve crafted a song that truly represents who we are, conveying relevant themes as well. Its energy and guitar riffs showcase our band’s sound at its best. Working together has been inspiring, and I believe listeners will also experience that energy. ‘The Plague’ is a part of our journey and a story we want to share.”

Following the singles “Innocent” and “Saint & Sinner” from Dead End Finland‘s upcoming sixth studio album, the band is now releasing a single called “Adrenaline.”
While the previous single “Saint & Sinner” showcased the band’s more modern style and the album’s first release “Innocent” demonstrated DEF’s ability to write gigantic and grandiose metal ballads, “Adrenaline” represents the band’s more straightforward expression. “Adrenaline” pushes forward like a train. It echoes our earlier work but with our current sound. This represents the “try not to mosh” section of the upcoming album,” rambles Santtu Rosen in his overalls while shoveling chicken shit on his new farm.

BIOGRAPHY:
Dead End Finland is a melodic metal band from Helsinki founded in 2007. The lineup, which has remained unchanged since the beginning, has enabled the band’s sound to develop into its current rich form. Dead End Finland is difficult to place into any specific genre, and in the songs you can hear tones from classical music to death metal. During the years, the band’s style has become even more bombastic and melodic. The compositions have gained more depth and insight. The upcoming sixth album takes the band in a more modern direction, although Dead End Finland’s recognizable sound and basic elements are still easily heard.

Visionary artist KIMMO KUUSNIEMI is proud to officially launch ANCIENT STREAMING ASSEMBLY (ASA) with the release of “Aurora Nuclearis,” a powerful 12-minute audiovisual experience. This release represents a significant milestone in ASA’s mission to merge art, music, and environmental advocacy, and marks the beginning of a bold new creative journey for Kuusniemi and his collaborators.
“Aurora Nuclearis” serves as a dynamic introduction to ASA’s unique blend of long-form and short-form content, seamlessly integrating music, visuals, and storytelling. The project draws deeply from themes of environmental sustainability and cultural preservation, with this inaugural piece setting the tone for future releases. ASA aims to create an immersive experience for a diverse global audience, offering both profound artistic expression and urgent environmental commentary.
Reflecting on the significance of “Aurora Nuclearis,” Kimmo Kuusniemi shares, “This piece beautifully bridges my musical journey, intertwining my past influences with the new creative direction of ASA. It’s a powerful start for the ASA project, paying homage to where we’ve come from while embracing where we’re headed. We are, after all, the sum of our past experiences, and ‘Aurora Nuclearis’ honours that truth.”
Dedicated to the memory of the late Finnish keyboardist Esa Kotilainen, who passed away in 2023, “Aurora Nuclearis” also pays tribute to a long-standing creative partnership. Kotilainen, known for his pioneering work in progressive music, first collaborated with Kuusniemi in the late 1970s with Sarcofagus—reputed to be Finland’s first heavy metal band. Their shared passion for pushing musical boundaries profoundly influenced the soundscapes of many projects over four decades. Originally conceived years ago, Kotilainen and Kimmo began working on “Aurora Nuclearis” together, with Kotilainen recording keyboards, but the project remained unfinished until now, symbolising both a continuation and a new beginning under ASA.

Viivi Kotilainen, Esa’s daughter, reflects on her father’s deep connection to nature: “Nature was everything to my father. He believed that the natural world was a source of endless inspiration and peace, shaping not only his music but his entire life. He often worried about the future, fearing that the beauty he experienced might not be available to future generations. My father saw nature as his refuge, his creative wellspring, and he passed that love down to us. Even in his later years, he shared moments from his nature walks with us, reminding us of the importance of staying connected to the world around us.”
To complement the full-length experience, ASA is also releasing several short-form videos, each approximately one minute long. These mini music videos, inspired by ancient environmental proverbs, offer viewers bite-sized yet thought-provoking content that underscores the urgency of today’s environmental crises.

CONTRIBUTIONS FROM COLLABORATORS:
Tuomas Rounakari’s shamanic violin brings an evocative, mystical layer to “Aurora Nuclearis,” enriching the piece with his deep cultural insights. Juho Martikainen’s innovative double bass playing adds a profound depth, complementing the piece’s rich, atmospheric soundscape.
ABOUT ASA:
ASA, led by Kimmo Kuusniemi with the support of Sakari Heiskanen and Tuomas Rounakari, is a cross-arts odyssey that fuses ancestral wisdom with modern digital platforms. ASA crafts narratives that resonate with contemporary audiences while drawing from ancient traditions. Through a combination of music, visuals, and storytelling, ASA aims to engage a global audience with its immersive and thought-provoking content.
ABOUT KIMMO KUUSNIEMI:
![]()
Finnish-born visionary artist, Kimmo Kuusniemi stands at the intersection of art, music, film, and environmental advocacy. Currently, Kuusniemi is engaged in several cutting-edge projects that blend technology, art, and environmental activism. One of his latest initiatives, the “Ancient Streaming Assembly”, merges traditional wisdom with modern digital platforms to promote environmental sustainability and cultural preservation.
Godfather of Finnish Heavy Metal in the 70s:
In the late 1970s, Kuusniemi established the legendary band Sarcofagus. Blending progressive and experimental elements with heavy rock, Sarcofagus crafted a version of heavy metal that was distinctly ahead of its time. Always at the cutting edge of innovation, Kuusniemi has consistently harnessed the latest technology to expand his artistic expression.
Music Video Pioneer in the 80s:
In 1981, showcasing his forward-thinking prowess, Kuusniemi produced and directed a full album length broadcast quality music video for his third album, Kimmo Kuusniemi Band “Moottorilinnut”. Coincidentally, this was the same year MTV made its debut in the USA, signalling the onset of a new era for music and visual media. Though MTV was launching on the other side of the Atlantic, Kuusniemi’s ambitious project underscored his position at the forefront of the evolving music-video landscape.
Eco-Filmmaker Before It Was Cool:
In the 1980s, Kuusniemi ventured deeply into environmental film-making. He produced a series of informational short films and documentaries highlighting various environmental topics, aimed at educating and raising public awareness.
Echoes from The Present in the 90s:
This commitment to environmental consciousness culminated in 1991 with the Double Vision’s “Dream On” project—a compelling film and extended single produced for the International World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The project received high visibility in the Music TV Europe and Asia.
More than three decades ago, the “Dream On” music video projected a cautionary tale of an impending environmental crisis. Disturbingly, the future once envisioned by the “Dream On” project has now become our present reality, showcasing humanity’s prolonged inaction.
Architect of Alternative Global Documentaries:
Following “Dream On”, Kuusniemi continued to make his mark in the realm of International film and television. He produced several TV documentaries that achieved international distribution.
Among his most notable works is the groundbreaking 8-hour adventure/history TV series, “Baltic Sea Adventure” which garnered widespread acclaim and captivated audiences globally from Greenland to Australia. The “Baltic Sea Adventure” series is a comprehensive TV series about the Baltic Sea countries, cultures, and environment.
Notably, the Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior ship was meant to be part of the series, but due to an unforeseen delay with the diving boat being stuck in a different part of the Baltic, the meeting was missed.
The Visionary of Things To Come:
Whether through his compelling documentaries, informational films, or innovative projects, Kuusniemi’s work continues to resonate with the imperative need to harmonise with nature, drawing insights from the past and weaving them into the tapestry of today’s narrative. His vision for a sustainable future is reflected in all aspects of his diverse and dynamic career.

ABOUT TUOMAS ROUNAKARI
![]()
Diving deep into the archived recordings of Siberian shamans, Tuomas birthed the SHAMANVIOLIN performance. His art is deeply influenced by the historical wax-cylinder recordings made by Finnish ethnographer Kai Donner between 1912 and 1914, which highlighted extinct languages and forgotten songs. Tuomas’ field trip to Siberia in 2002 further immersed him in the indigenous Khanty and Forest-Nenets cultures, expanding his repertoire.
A child prodigy on the violin, he always had an affinity for music that sent him into a trance state. Moving to New York City in 1998, Tuomas explored World music and recognised the value of oral traditions. This epiphany led him back to his Finnish roots, where he discovered the intersection of Siberian shamanic music with Finnish laments.
By 2001, Tuomas was back in Finland, evolving his Shamanviolin performance and integrating his compositions with musical traditions from the Eurasian Arctic. This journey also led him to teach laments, revitalising this almost-extinct musical tradition.
Today, Tuomas continues to travel the globe, performing with Shamanviolin, while also conducting workshops on shamanic traditions and music.
Having completed his doctoral studies in music at the Sibelius Academy, he now holds the title of Doctor of Music.
Tuomas unites traditions, times, and cultures, inviting all into a transcendent musical experience exclusively through the soundscapes of Shamanviolin.
ABOUT JUHO MARTIKAINEN
![]()
Juho Martikainen, a distinguished double bass player, began his musical journey in 1983. He studied at Kuopio Conservatory and Sibelius Academy, completing his Double Bass Diploma with honors in 2002. As an educator, he has taught at institutions like the Sibelius Academy, influencing many students who now perform in Finnish Symphony Orchestras.
A freelance double bass artist since 1994, Martikainen has played with major Finnish Symphony Orchestras and toured internationally across Japan, the USA, Europe, and South America. He co-founded the trio At The Hollow in 2008, releasing the acclaimed album “What I Hold Most Dear” in 2015, which showcased his innovative use of the double bass.
Notably, Martikainen has been among the pioneers in integrating the classical double bass into rock, ambient, and experimental genres, where it plays a central and melodic role.
In recent years, Martikainen has focused on composing and producing solo material under his own name. This has allowed him to fully express his artistic vision and continue his evolution as an artist. This personal work has produced the EP “Fragments from the Memory Line” and six singles, inspired by his wife’s, artist Mari Martikainen, paintings.
Finnish hard rock band Rylos has released a new single Prisoner of Thoughts. The song tells about how a person can become a prisoner of his own thoughts, which prevents him from believing in himself. Prisoner of Thoughts is the first single from the upcoming fifth album Signs of Life, which will be released in March 2025. The album production was already started two years ago, but the constant line-up changes delayed the making of the album.

‘”Statue in Uniform” is the second single from Luusäkki’s upcoming self-titled debut album. The album was written and recorded in Helsinki in the fall of 2022. “Statue in Uniform” combines the dark tones of black metal with the fury of death metal. The song addresses the harsh reality of conflicts and aims to depict the inhuman effects of war as well as the cyclical nature of human suffering. The imagery paints a picture of lost souls and identities.”
