The new master of melodic gloom, Marianas Rest, will release their new album in January – The Colour Of You single accidentally became a love song

Marianas Rest, who draw their heavy melancholy from the beautiful landscapes of Kymenlaakso (Finland), will release their fifth studio album The Bereaved on January 16th, and now listeners can dive into its atmosphere with the tune of the single The Colour Of You. The single that starts a new era for Marianas Rest is also accompanied by a music video directed by the band’s trusted partner Jari Heino, which was filmed this spring in the beautiful winter weather of Kotka.

“It was cold again, but against all odds, we avoided the mole fever,” the band says with satisfaction.

Founded in Kotka in 2013, Marianas Rest has quickly become one of the country’s most interesting messengers of melancholic and melodic death metal, also abroad, and their palette is now complemented by a collaboration with the Noble Demon record label.

The band, who flavor their music with doom and post metal, is very comfortable in their dark and even disturbing musical landscapes. However, it is a place that is both warm and comforting at the same time. The single The Colour Of You also has its own twist.

“We didn’t originally think that Colour would end up as a love song, but here it is,” comments singer Jaakko Mäntymaa and continues: “Like the whole album, The Colour of You deals with personal loss. Sometimes it can be healthier to just forget than to hang on to memories – no matter how dear they are.”

“At first we had an acoustic demo with some string arrangements, but we didn’t really know which direction to go with it. We even went back and forth on different ideas, but nothing really caught on. Then, when Jaakko came up with the theme of the lyrics, it was an immediate ‘that’s how it goes’ moment, and a light bulb started to flash over my head. In the end, the arrangement came about in maybe half an hour,” adds guitarist Nico Mänttäri.

The upcoming album The Bereaved, like the single just released, takes listeners to the brink of loss, inevitably reflecting on what was left undone or unsaid. Who is ultimately more blessed – the departed or the grieving?

“Like the entire album, this song is about personal loss. Sometimes it can be healthier to forget than to cling to memories, no matter how dear they are.”
