While She Sleeps – So What?

British quintet While She Sleeps continue to gain popularity with their energetic blend of heavy metalcore and catchy grooves that now more than ever have the potential to reach a wider audience worldwide with the latest full length “So What?”.

The sonic formula behind “Anti-Social” can sound quite frenetic mixing steady sharp guitar riffs and angered screams according to metalcore style but all this doesn’t compromise the essential easier melodic approach of the chorus and the electro layers.

“Inspire” often focuses on crunchy guitar driven grooves still featuring familiar metalcore elements amplified by the scattered heavier segments and furious vocals but the song’s main theme relies on a calmer atmospheric & melodic essence.

The title track offers loads of brighter melodic moments as guitars tend to acquire modern polished tonalities surrounded by dreamy atmospheres but at times the rage becomes real through galloping guitar riffs and faster drumming.

Certainly “Haunt Me” features some cool guitar riffs that successfully channels the band’s heavier roots while the strong melodic ensemble and consequent catchy chorus this time feel a bit darker accompanied by enjoyable subtle atmospheric arrangements.

On “Elephant” the rhythmic sections become more aggressive evoking darkly enraged feelings clearly amplified by the ravenous screams while the melodic passages are characterized by luminous guitar tonalities and atmospheric serenity that enhance the emotional aspects of the clean vocals.

In the beginning the electro elements of “Gates Of Paradise” create a spacey mood that introduces cohesive rhythmic blasts with galloping metalcore style guitar riffs and a sing along chorus while the significantly slower breakdown features an overload of atmospheric melancholia and smooth clean vocals.

At this point While She Sleeps have developed a precise music style which constantly showcases accessible modern metal dynamics spontaneously leading to impactful grooves and big choruses throughout “So What?”.

Hypocrisy Live in Chicago

Fronted by mastermind Peter Tägtgren Hypocrisy finally return to North America co-headlining the successful “Death …Is Just The Beginning” tour with label mates Fleshgod Apocalypse. It all started back in 1992 and certainly Hypocrisy still hold an influential status in the current metal scene so it was not surprising to see such a large crowd of loyal fans at Bottom Lounge in Chicago. Hypocrisy chose a setlist that definitely represents their signature blend of fast & heavy death metal grooves and darkly melodic depth ranging from the classic tracks “Fractured Millennium”, “The Final Chapter” and “Into The Abyss” to the most recent “End Of Disclosure”.

Sâver – They Came With Sunlight

Featuring members of Norwegian doom outfits Tombstones and Hymn the new band Sâver describes the music style of the debut album “They Came With Sunlight” as “heavy, spaced-out darkness” so you should get ready for an intense sonic experience.

The beginning of “Distant Path” is already super trippy with thick bass lines that could go on forever but instead introduce a mysterious and often super heavy sludge ensemble characterized by monumental guitar driven grooves, desperate screams and painfully slower doom tinged moments.

“I, Vanish” combines cosmic energy and heavy sludge momentum as guitars concoct mighty riffs throughout the song supported by massive rhythmic blasts but also some shimmering harmonies that emphasize the substantial spacey mood.

There are only scattered melodic hints through “How They Envisioned Life” which stands out for the monolithic full blown doom dynamics as guitar riffs could not sound heavier constantly evoking funereal vibes and building ominous crushing grooves accompanied by tormented screams.

The ambitious album’s finale is the massive lengthy opus “Altered Light” where the whole instrumentation is surrounded by a perennial darkness that generates a suspenseful mood. Guitars can always deliver intense doom progressions following an anguished atmosphere but also provide the right dosage of melancholic melodies during the dramatically slower introspective moments.

With the release of “They Came With Sunlight” Sâver share with the world their dark music vision without any hesitation demonstrating a diverse songwriting approach and a strong desire to develop a unique style.

Witchers Creed – Awakened From The Tomb

It’s a really exciting time for Swedish doom raiders Witchers Creed as they are ready to share their music with the world releasing the debut full length “Awakened From The Tomb”.

“Witchers Creed” immediately channels vintage vibes with an overload of classic doom guitar riffs that build up solid grooves characterized by a generous dosage of darkened tonalities and stoner rock elements plus the shredding guitar solo is definitely entertaining.

“Depths Of The Black Void” maintains a slower yet heavy rhythmic section that puts in the spotlight the moody bass lines accompanied by monumental guitar riffs and rocker style vocals that will embrace a catchy delivery in the chorus.

With a bittersweet romanticism the rock ballad “Larissa” changes pace to focus on spellbinding guitar phrases and 70’s influenced melodies that ultimately amplify the retro rock vibes surrounding the rather emotional vocal delivery.

On “Monolith” Witchers Creed confidently follow a precise music vision where traditional heavy doom tonalities are fundamental generating intriguing and definitely monolithic grooves with compelling guitar leads and intense rhythmic patterns. This track also offers hypnotizing moments as at some point guitars spontaneously shift to a major spacey melodic jam that will naturally continue on the instrumental title track acquiring extra psychedelic vibes and delivering an overdose of gloomy melodies.

Witchers Creed step out of the grave seeking a niche in the heavy rock scene and listening to “Awakened From The Tomb” you will see that these young musicians crafted this album with absolute passion.

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats Live in Chicago

Created by mastermind Kevin Starrs, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats quickly started to gain interest within the British underground music scene but the latest immersive album “Wasteland”, released last year via Rise Above Records, truly impressed a much wider audience. Now the band’s intriguing psychedelic proto-metal & doom style has conquered fans worldwide as proved by the successful ‘Peace Across The Wasteland’ tour in North America. At the sold out show at Metro in Chicago Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats delivered a memorable hypnotizing performance on a dark stage illuminated almost exclusively by the trippy projections in the background playing songs from all the albums including “I See Through You”, “Shockwave City”, “Blood Runner” and “No Return” from “Wasteland”.

Graveyard Live in Chicago

The release of the album “Peace” last year represented a great return for Swedish rockers Graveyard and the ‘Peace Across The Wasteland’ tour co-headlining with Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats has been another successful experience packing venues all over North America. It wasn’t surprising to see that Graveyard show at the Metro in Chicago was sold out as their intense music style continues to garner new acolytes in North America. While there is certainly a renaissance of vintage rock and stoner style, Graveyard’s sound always stands out for the hypnotic psychedelic grooves and the gorgeous understated melodies. For the setlist Graveyard chose many songs from the latest full length “Peace” including “Walk On”, “The Fox” and “It Ain’t Over Yet” which definitely sounded even more enthralling during this vibrant live performance and it was also nice to hear several songs from the older acclaimed album “Hisingen Blues” such as the title track, “Uncomfortably Numb” and “The Siren”.
