Ison – Inner – Space

Ison is a particularly intriguing new project started by the talented multiinstrumentalist Daniel Änghede of Crippled Black Phoenix and vocalist Heike Langhans of Draconian and the debut full length “Inner – Space” invites you to join them on a fascinating cosmic journey.

The title track takes you far away, maybe to an astral plane or even another galaxy, with the cinematic approach featuring tasteful multilayered arrangements and lovely guitar harmonies that evoke a rare sense of tranquility surrounding Heike’s absolutely spellbinding voice. 

The striking emotional duet with guest vocalist Neige of Alcest is the highlight of “Radiance” which feels aptly luminous like a distant nostalgic memory that you keep trying to hold close to your heart as it flows through the delicate melancholic maze of atmospheric ensemble and soothing guitar melodies.  

“Equals” is made of dreams and pale lights as the enchanting atmospheric arrangements and Heike’s gentle vocals surround you and keep you warm while the slow burning guitar melodies seem to spread an intense cosmic energy. 

On “The Fifth World” Heike’s celestial vocal harmonies guide you through a spacey journey surrounded by the ethereal tonalities and the profound melancholy of the lavish atmospheric synths channeling a dreamy shoegaze inspiration.  

On “Everything’s About To Change Forever” the vivid beauty of the elaborate cinematic arrangements can evoke gloomy feelings as well as uplifting vibes and Heike’s sincere vocal delivery certainly emphasize the introspective depth. 

While the music style of Ison might be hard to categorize it’s easy to fall in love and basically space out listening to the magical soundscapes and kaleidoscopic emotions that render “Inner – Space” an immersive sonic experience. 

Alcest – Spiritual Instinct

French blackgaze pioneers Alcest worked relentlessly to develop a unique enthralling music style spreading their magical sound all over the world and influencing countless emerging bands. With the release of the sixth full length “Spiritual Instinct” Alcest craft an ethereal collage of passion and melancholy fully expressed by the intricate soundscapes and the evident mystical aura. 

“Les Jardins De Minuit” lies in a limbo between darkness and light as it begins with the understated beauty of melancholic guitars and ethereal vocals that will naturally embrace an irresistible blackened essence reminiscing of the band’s earlier discography in fact the wilder riffage and the tormented growls fit perfectly within the song’s cosmic vision. 

“Sapphire” shines for the moody guitar progressions and the nostalgic vocal delivery that certainly belong to a distant dreamy world even if the rhythmic core has the ability to spontaneously generate wonderful catchy rock vibes that can appeal to a wide audience.

Darkend – Spiritual Resonance

Italian black metal warlocks Darkend have crafted a new arcane ritual symbolized by the latest dark offering “Spiritual Resonance” which will inevitably spread pure esoteric energy. 

Since the very beginning “The Three Ghouls Buried At Golgotha” is characterized by a darkened spiritual aura as haunting atmospheric arrangements introduce a series of sinister rhythmic crescendos filled with relentless guitar riffs & drumming accompanied by a satisfying mixture of theatrical vocals and venomous growls. 

The mystical pathway of “Scorpio Astraea High Coronation” comes to life with compelling darkened melodic guitars following a slower seductive rhythm that still showcases a strong black metal inspiration matched by the hellish torment expressed by the foreboding vocals.

Une Misère – Sermon

Emerging from the burgeoning Icelandic metal scene Une Misère aim to grab your attention with an interesting mixture of violent grooves and darkened emotions on the debut album “Sermon”.

On “Sin & Guilt” intense ominous tonalities influence the guitar work that hits you in the face with relentless riffage and the resulting grooves are characterized by menacing precise rhythmic segments.

The title track amplifies a sense of impending doom as guitars develop particularly obscure tonalities leading to a gloomy introspective momentum but you can rest assured that the rhythmic section is always ready to deliver ferocious heavy progressions.

Certainly all over “Sermon” you will find strong hardcore elements leading to intense rhythmic patterns yet the sonic pathway chosen by Une Misère is also fueled by a blackened force that matches the themes revolving around existential struggles. 

Bent Knee – You Know What They Mean

Boston based band Bent Knee is an incredible creative collective in fact it’s not surprising to see that the new album “You Know What They Mean” is ready to deliver all kinds of mind bending soundscapes with a particularly versatile songwriting approach. 

“Bone Rage” will hit you in the face with a turbulent instrumental ensemble revolving around acidic guitar riffs and unusual rhythmic progressions but vocalist Courtney Swain is certainly the star of the show demonstrating a striking vocal range. 

“Give Us The Gold” is rather entertaining with a groovy upbeat rhythm that channels positive energy and makes you want to jump but the moody guitar melodies can also create introspective moments emphasized by emotive vocals. 

Just listening to Courtney’s otherworldly vocals “Hold Me In” will quickly become a favorite as the whole instrumentation effortlessly shifts from catchy rock elements to spellbinding melodic passages through futuristic atmospheric waves. 

“Cradle Of Rocks” is full of cool bouncy rock dynamics and the guitar work offers additional diversity mixing crispy tonalities with dirty rock accents while vocals tend to amplify the melodic depth with a luminous delivery. 

“Lovemenot” is full of surprises with borderline dissonant guitar riffs that can sound heavier and darker while Courtney’s vocal performance adds playful vibes or becomes utterly dramatic balancing the melodic spirit and the chaotic moments. 

With an artsy rock spirit “Catch Light” certainly shines for the great diversity offering danceable groovy rhythmic segments enhanced by impeccable vocals but there are also enigmatic vibes due to the introvert cinematic themes that convey contrasting feelings. 

You might try to analyze the experimental approach of Bent Knee but it would be a waste of time as they deliberately push boundaries with a rare artistic freedom that renders “You Know What They Mean” a truly unique opus. 

 

Year Of The Goat – Novis Orbis Terrarum Ordinis

Swedish occult rock masters Year Of The Goat will inevitably put a spell on you with the arcane grooves and an eloquent exploration of the seven deadly sins on the latest majestic opus “Novis Orbis Terrarum Ordinis”.  

The dark journey begins with the bewitching retro vibes of “Subortus” which perfectly balances nostalgic guitar melodies and monumental doom tinged riffs resulting in a groovy instrumental ensemble that also showcases a major dramatic depth due to the presence of solemn vocals. 

The ‘70s rock vibes of “Luxuria” lead to entertaining rounds of groovy guitar riffs in fact the consequent irresistible rhythmic force makes you want to jump & dance while the guitar soloing channels a satisfying melodic melancholia. 

On “Ira” the elaborate guitar work is destined to steal the spotlight crafting several elegant solos and a multitude of fascinating melodies that flow like a dream evoking an absolutely intense nostalgia accompanied by a particularly heartfelt vocal delivery while later the rhythmic section will concoct plenty of heavier & sinister grooves. 

“Invidia” goes straight to a groovy galore with a super catchy chorus and electrifying guitar riffs so this is probably the most accessible song on the album even when the softer melodies convey a spellbinding darker mood. 

With a theatrical approach “Subicio” is a massive lengthy track that feels like it could go on forever channeling sheer melancholy with an overdose of exquisite guitar leads that constantly enhance the dramatic aspects while vocals also have the power to express so many wistful feelings yet the final part acquires a compelling mixture of epic and esoteric atmospheres.

The occult spirit of “Novis Orbis Terrarum Ordinis” is palpable in every song yet Year Of The Goat often manage to step out of such obscure sonic realm to successfully create catchy music and delightful melodic tapestries that any listener could truly appreciate. 

Insomnium – Heart Like A Grave

There has been a major buzz around the long awaited new record “Heart Like A Grave” and Finnish melodic death metal purveyors Insomnium continue to evoke the irresistible melancholy that garnered so much attention on their previous releases.

Staying true to Insomnium’s signature style the beginning of “Valediction” is characterized by sharp guitar driven grooves with a prominent death metal spirit that will later embrace gloomy atmospheric arrangements and spellbinding darkened melodies carefully crafted by the refined guitar work. 

“Neverlast” perfectly balances moments of untamed aggression featuring fast rhythmic patterns accompanied by fiery growls and elegant melodic phrases enhanced by the wistful guitar tonalities that will actually stand out for the extremely passionate delivery. 

“Pale Morning Star” offers sumptuous melodic tapestries and an intricate approach starting with fragile acoustic guitars that open the portal to a dreamy sonic realm where melancholia deeply influences the harmonious instrumental crescendos yet you will find a fair dosage of rage through the bold guitar riffage and the monumental growls. 

On “Mute Is My Sorrow” vocals can acquire a solemn theatrical delivery and a profound melancholy lingers throughout the song generating compelling heartfelt melodies and delicate atmospheric layers in contrast with the triumphant rhythmic blasts that always reminisce of the band’s primal death metal roots. 

The title track shines for the opulent atmospheric grandeur and the consequent dramatic depth as the emotional essence of the bittersweet guitar melodies and the whispered vocals can easily move the listeners but there is also a palpable epic flair fully expressed by the majestic choirs and the powerful rhythmic section. 

The fascinating instrumental track “Karelia” marks a majestic album finale and sounds like an ideal wintry soundtrack as magnificent keyboards arrangements create glowing kaleidoscopic soundscapes naturally entwined with the somber beauty of the guitar work expressing cathartic feelings and unparalleled nostalgia. 

With the remarkable songwriting skills and the essential Nordic melancholy “Heart Like A Grave” proves that Insomnium are really becoming undisputed masters of melodic death metal destined to conquer even more fans worldwide.

Wednesday 13 – Necrophaze

Thinking about horror themes in music Wednesday 13 always comes to mind in fact you can expect a frightening sonic experience evidently inspired by classic 80s movies and awful night terrors on the latest record “Necrophaze”.

Featuring a theatrical narration by legendary Alice Cooper the title track marks a grand beginning with 80s inspired synths that build a suspenseful mood while the main heavier elements will emerge with crunchy guitar riffs and a groovy rhythmic ensemble constantly surrounded by a generous dosage of sinister atmospheric layers. 

“Bring Your Own Blood” invites you to an obviously scary party so you better watch yourself as guitars confidently trigger entertaining grooves and the synths tapestries amplify the expected spine-chilling vibes. 

You can easily perceive the horrific serial killer vibes all over “ZODIAC” and again the synths hold a dominant role providing a strong soundtrack style background with multilayered ghastly tonalities mixed with the industrial approach of the rhythmic section. 

Especially in the beginning “Decompose” acquires an extremely gloomy mood with softer atmospheric arrangements but later will unleash loads of catchy guitar driven grooves and a sing along chorus featuring aptly ghoulish vocals. 

The deliciously creepy track “The Hearse” stands out for the profoundly mournful melodies and darkened atmospheres that convey a bewitching gothic glamour consequently the Duke of Spook delivers a particularly malignant vocal performance. 

Despite the macabre title “Life Will Kill Us All” feels almost uplifting with the prominent melodic elements and the high energy of the punk rock grooves that lead to a rather catchy chorus and while the instrumental passages sound less evil the vocals maintain all the freaky vibes throughout the song. 

“Necrophaze” is the ideal horror movie soundtrack, an ode to shock rock and all the creatures lurking in the dark so if you dare to enter the super spooky sonic realm carefully created by Wednesday 13 you will have a lot of fun. 

Noekk – Waltzing In Obscurity

Empyrium’s Helm and Schwadorf are truly prolific artists and this time they return to their alter egos Funghus Baldachin and F. F. Yugoth with the classic prog rock project Noekk to deliver the dazzling fourth full-length “Waltzing In Obscurity”.

The title track stands out for the trippy retro vibes deeply influencing the intricate instrumental passages and intriguing tempo variations while the somber guitar tonalities lead to a refined melodic ensemble accompanied by solemn vocals and lavish atmospheric layers. 

“The Mirror” offers an elegant blend of dreamy atmospheres and nostalgic melodies that naturally flourish through the peaceful folkish soundscape yet some bold rhythmic segments keep alive the inner prog rock spirit. 

“On Summits” is full of engaging prog rock dynamics as guitars concoct loads of energetic riffs following a fiery rhythm yet the mood will eventually shift to a sense of serenity as the folk elements take over with soothing arpeggios and vintage organ harmonies. 

“The Windwaker” can channel a profound tranquility through the warm acoustic phrases yet guitars will become increasingly heavier with doom tinged riffage leading to a darker atmosphere emphasized by the baritone vocal delivery and the brooding arrangements. 

On “The Lily Of Reverence” guitars deliver thrilling prog rock riffs with the additions of subtle psychedelic accents while the pastoral ambience will ultimately thrive through the understated acoustic melodies and the stylish atmospheric elements.

Ofdrykkja – Gryningsvisor

Consumed by darkness Swedish atmospheric black metal band Ofdrykkja begin a new therapeutic emotional journey on the third full length “Gryningsvisor”.

On “The Swan” gelid minimalist guitar phrases induce a sense of perennial desolation amplified by the mournful clean vocals and the laid back melodic progressions glowing through the darker black metal oriented rhythmic section accompanied by fiery growls. 

“Swallowed By The Night” evokes endless nostalgia focusing on lovely mellow arpeggios and a general contemplative atmosphere while the ethereal vocal performance by Miranda Samuelsson brings a glimpse of healing light. 

Without losing the inner melancholy and icy tonalities “Wither” often offers catchy guitar progressions and luminous atmospheric layers leading to a pale sense of hopefulness while the distant screams can still channel despair and anger.
