BIOGRAPHY:

Obscure Fate was originally formed in 2008 in Paltamo, Finland, as the solo project of guitarist and songwriter Kaleva Kovalainen. In 2009, drummer Jari Keränen and bassist Petri Möttönen joined, giving the songs their first real band form. Shortly after, guitarist Joni Moisanen and vocalist Tapio Möttönen became official members, and together the group arranged dozens of tracks for full band performances. From the very beginning, Tapio handled the lyrics, with Petri contributing to the song Spectral Exile.

The current lineup was completed in 2019 when bassist Antti Möttönen replaced Petri. Musically, Obscure Fate is rooted in traditional melodic death metal, though elements of thrash and classic heavy metal also find their way into the band’s sound. Kaleva’s prolific songwriting provided a strong foundation for the band, while the lyrics explore themes of social criticism, fictional storytelling, and inner struggles.

In 2021, Obscure Fate released their first EP. Recording sessions for their debut full-length album began soon after, but due to various setbacks the process turned into a long and seemingly endless project. Finally, in April 2025, the band reached the final stages of completing the album, marking an important milestone in their journey. The debut album ‘Shades of a Dying World’ is set to be released later in 2026 via Inverse Records.

THE FIXER Unleashes New Single “Ugly Knots” For “The Ugly Knots Tour” Across Canada w/ TEKNOSIS

The Fixer has dropped their new single “Ugly Knots”, a sonic and emotional powerhouse that sets the tone as they kick off their “The Ugly Knots Tour” this October with fellow hometown band Teknosis.

​“Ugly Knots” is a raw, genre-defying track that fuses industrial metal with hardcore grit and ambient textures. It opens with abrasive riffs and harsh electronics before evolving into a sweeping, melodic climax, mirroring the emotional journey the band intends for listeners.

​“This song is for the kind people we’ve seen be hated, harassed, and threatened. It’s written from the first-person perspective, but the spoken word section—contributed by our friend John Forget—comes directly from someone who lived that experience. It’s a message of strength in the face of cruelty,” says the band.

Lyrically and musically, “Ugly Knots” is one of The Fixer’s heaviest and most artful releases to date. Eschewing formulaic conventions, the band leans hard into their industrial roots while exploring themes of anger, sadness, and resilience. Fiddle Meets Fire THUNDEROR’s Celtic Rock Anthem “Cape Breton Home” Celebrates Maritime Heritage

Canadian rock powerhouse THUNDEROR returns with a stirring new single and music video, “Cape Breton Home,” a Celtic Rock anthem that pays homage to the island roots of frontman JJ Tartaglia. Known for their electrifying blend of heavy metal, pop punk, and rock opera, the band takes a reflective turn with this release, weaving nostalgia and tradition into their signature sound.

“I wanted to write a song inspired by back home, maybe it’s the time passing by, I felt a bit nostalgic and needed something to reconnect me to the island. What better way than with music! And I think in return, Cape Breton also needs a song like this,” says Tartaglia.

The track features a guest performance by acclaimed fiddler Colin Grant, whose work with Rum Ragged earned a 2021 JUNO nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year. Grant’s authentic Cape Breton fiddle style adds a rich layer of heritage to the song, grounding it in the island’s musical legacy.

The accompanying video, filmed on location in Cape Breton, captures the rugged beauty and emotional resonance of the place that inspired the song.

“I had a great trip back to shoot the video. It was a full-circle moment,” Tartaglia adds.

Formed in 2020 by multi-JUNO-nominated musicians JJ Tartaglia and Jonny Nesta (Skull Fist), THUNDEROR has quickly carved out a global following. Numento to Sandstorm Metal Festival in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in February 2026

Numento, a progressive melodic death metal band from the Helsinki, has been confirmed as part of the Sandstorm Metal Festival lineup to be held on February 7, 2026. The event, which will be held at the P7 Arena in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, will be headlined by Italian Lacuna Coil.
Numento is the first Finnish band in the festival’s history. Previous performers at the festival include for example Brazilian Nervosa.

Progressive, melodic death metal band Numento made their way to the stage of the world’s largest metal festival in the summer of 2025 through the Wacken Metal Battle. The band placed second in the international final, which was attended by over 12,000 bands globally, 30 of which were seen on the Wacken stage. This speaks volumes about the current level of the lineup. The band has been described as one of Finland’s most potential bands, and their explosive live energy has earned the band the nickname “prog bomb”. Numento’s trademarks include the phenomenally versatile vocalist Katri, and the sparkling electric kantele in her hands, the sound of which has become an inseparable part of the band’s music.

Numento has had two record years in a row in terms of gig numbers, and through hard gigging, this lineup from the capital region has grown to be a pretty tough live band in different parts of Finland. Those who saw Numento for the first time described the experience as “jaw-dropping”. The band’s third album “The Antimatter Fantasy”, which received 5/5 reviews, was released in June 2024, and the vinyl version of the album was released in December of the same year. 2024 was Numento’s 20th anniversary. The previous full-length album “The Vile Entity” was released in October 2022.

THE RETICENT’s Fifth Studio Album “please” Explores The Struggles of Mental Illness; Unveil Music Video For Single “The Concealment”

Generation Prog Records is proud to announce the release of “please,” the emotionally searing new album from progressive metal act The Reticent. Led by Grammy-nominated music educator and multi-instrumentalist Chris Hathcock, “please” is a concept album that plunges listeners into the harrowing realities of mental illness, suicide, and survival. The album will be available on November 13th, 2025.

The first single, “The Concealment (Those Who Don’t Want To Wake),” is accompanied by a haunting music video that captures the anguish of hiding one’s suffering in plain sight.

“The Concealment could be thought of as the thesis statement of the new album. It tries to capture what it is to attempt to carry on with your life while struggling with the crushing weight of mental illness. At work, with family, at school, wherever, we have to don masks and pretend we are ‘just fine’ when inside we may wish to go to sleep and never wake up again. 1 in 4 adults will have a mental health crisis this year, and there are 1.5 million suicide attempts per year in this country. It’s all around us, yet most will not talk about it, most will not get help, and most will suffer in silence. We are not alone, yet we feel intensely lonely because of that disconnection. For me, I have to pretend to be someone else every day as a teacher – confident, smart, strong – whilst inside I often wish fervently for oblivion to end my near constant pain. When the despair and the grief and the hopelessness come, the isolation and hollowness of all things can rob life of any color. For those who know what it is like to live with these disorders, it is indeed lonely here,” says Hathcock.

Featuring ten emotionally driven tracks, the album was written in just six months. Drums were recorded in a single day, all other instruments in two, but vocals took two weeks, leaving Hathcock with a laryngeal injury so severe he couldn’t speak for six weeks. During the filming of “The Concealment” video, Hathcock broke two toes, sprained three others, and tore his rotator cuff. He performed at ProgStorm Festival in Montreal, Canada, just six days later, concealing his injuries behind the band’s emotionally intense stagecraft.
​
​“please” is also The Reticent‘s first album, engineered almost entirely by Hathcock at his Silent Muse Studio. Only the drums were tracked at The Basement Studios with longtime producer Jamie King (BTBAM, The Contortionist), who also took care of mixing and mastering for the record.
​
This fifth studio album includes subtle nods to clinical psychologist Kay Redfield Jamison, with lyrical references to her books “Night Falls Fast” and “An Unquiet Mind,” and samples of her voice appearing in “Discharge.”

Hailed as “prog’s most emotionally gut-wrenching” band, The Reticent began as Hathcock’s solo outlet for personal trauma. Over time, it evolved into a full-fledged progressive metal force, known for concept albums like “On The Eve Of A Goodbye” and “The Oubliette.” Joined by guitarist James Nelson (Nospūn) and bassist Paul McBride (Voraath), The Reticent delivers live performances that are more performance art than concert, intensely immersive and emotionally devastating.

Bloodred Hourglass’ long-awaited full-length We Should Be Buried Like This released

Bloodred Hourglass have already received rave reviews for their seventh full-length, and now We Should Be Buried Like This has been released. Released on the German label Out of Line, the album combines explosive aggression with melodic beauty and is, according to the band, the most honest and uncompromising album of their career, without questioning or embellishing, without consoling, explaining or proving – it only says what had to be said.

“For us, this album is a collection of end-time songs – not just about the end of the world, but also about certain emotions, beliefs and illusions. In the songs, love is just an echo, sacrifices feel empty and every feeling is an open wound. We deal with the decay of humanity, mistakes repeated from generation to generation, the spirit of the times that feeds indifference, hatred and detachment, as well as self-centeredness and individualism that has grown to unhealthy proportions. The future looks black, and unfortunately it no longer scares us, but feels inevitable,” the band describes.

Musically, Bloodred Hourglass also combines its recognizable sounds on the album with new elements, as guest soloists are heard on the album for the first time.

“The album exudes raw, intense energy and a melodic beauty and power that is guaranteed to be contagious. We’ve also included a last-gasp amount of new elements: guest voices and moments where we reach outside the box. It feels especially good to stand on our own strong foundations without having to prove anything to anyone. This is an album that was born from a compelling need to tear open and say things as they are. Perhaps that’s why this became the most aggressive and straightforward album we’ve ever made – and perhaps that’s why it looks the most like us.”

The top song of the ten-track album is the last song written on the album, Shun the Limelight, whose music video production swelled to a massive size with 80 fans participating in the filming.

“We wanted something special for the last video song. Usually the fans – the ones who make this whole journey meaningful and possible – are left out of the spotlight. However, we have an incredibly loyal and passionate fan base that has followed and supported the band year after year. With this video, we wanted to give them the opportunity to be a concrete part of the making and step into the spotlight themselves by playing a central role in the video’s creation. Nu metal’s new Finnish comet Kosto tackles the harsh stereotype of the male model – Miehet ei itke

Earlier this year Kosto released their debut EP, “Kiitos.” The band is releasing even more powerful material. The newly released single “Miehet ei itke” is the first single from a new EP to be released next year, and the game is opened without fear of the opinions of potential detractors – the topic is important:

Miehet ei itke is an ironic statement on the prevailing perception of masculinity and manhood. Can a man cry? What have we been raised to be like, and is this male model going around in an eternal circle? Are coldness and screaming the only alternatives to feelings?

“The biggest questioners of masculinity are other men. We expect that there is a certain mold that we should fit into – or we are made to fit through violence,” singer and lyricist Jarno Hyökyvaara reflects and continues:

“I myself have been hypersensitive and prone to anxiety and depression since childhood. I suffered from anxiety disorder and I have learned to live with it. The only way to accept myself as I am is to admit that my strengths are sensitivity, empathy and striving for honesty in terms of emotions.”

Kosto, who hails from Valkeakoski, Helsinki, Järvenpää and Jyväskylä, wants to spark a discussion about young men’s coping and well-being and upbringing with their new single. The band will be collaborating with the Väestöliitto Poikien Puhelimi during the autumn. For example, on Men’s Day 19.11. Kosto will visit Poikien Puhelimi’s TikTok live to discuss the topic.

“I became a father to a son in 2019. After this, I have had to think about my own home upbringing and the environment in which I grew up as a man. What kind of educator do I want to be? Do I strive to do my part to ensure that the world is more open to the emotional upbringing of men as well. It is our job as men to highlight shortcomings, for example, the marginalization of boys, and to show by our own example that yes: men are allowed to cry!”, Jarno says.

“As a student of East Helsinki and a music therapist, I feel that music can be a saving resource for dealing with emotions and experiences for young people who do not necessarily have the tools to verbalize them. That is why we also want to do concrete work for young people, for example now with Poikien Puhelimi,” guitarist Sami Selei explains the background to the collaboration.

Sparzanza has stretched its boundaries to become even heavier and more brutal – New album out now

One of the most enduring names in Swedish metal, Sparzanza returns with a new album for the first time in almost a decade. The band’s ninth album, From Dust to Darkness, is wrapped in the band’s signature blend of crushing riffs, dark melodies and choruses that hit the listener straight in the gut. Our guitarist Calle has written a ton of inspiring riffs, with plenty of challenging tempos. The album sounds really good and we’re excited to be back in full swing,” says vocalist Fredrik Weileby.

“We wanted to push ourselves out of our comfort zone so we could create something really crushing. I’m sure our fans will love this album,” continues bassist Johan Carlsson.

The album also features more different vocal techniques.

“For example, The Great Noise has all the possible vocal styles – raw aggression and delicate tones – as you should when you’re singing about witch hunts and being born in blood,” Weileby laughs.

With the new album, Weileby proves that he’s at the best of his career, and bassist Johan Carlsson gives credit to the band’s guitarist for this:

“Our guitarist Magnus Eronen also worked as a recorder this time, and he has developed the whole band, especially when it comes to the songs. He knows exactly when and how to push the best possible performance out of Fredrik,” says Carlsson.

How do disco and death connect? – Avatar released the final single from their album Don’t Go In The Forest

Avatar, the metal circus that is striving to reach the top of the metal world from Sweden, will release their highly anticipated new album Don’t Go in the Forest on October 31st – just in time for Halloween! The band is serving up the last taste of their upcoming album today in the form of the single Death And Glitz, which have released accompanied by a visualizer.

“Death and Glitz is a song about perversion and indifference. A homeless young runaway falls and dies on the dance floor. The flashes of a crime scene investigator’s camera turn into paparazzi flashes on the red carpet. We love him because he died. Now he’s perfect. Death is sold as entertainment, and that’s what makes it so sick,” says singer Johannes Eckerström.

The upcoming album has so far released the singles Captain Goat, In the Airwaves and the previous single Tonight We Must Be Warriors, which was released accompanied by a music video.

“We still feel like we’re just getting started, and that’s our secret ingredient. Don’t Go In The Forest is full of things we’ve never done before. It has songs and concepts we’ve never even approached before. We’ve lost ourselves in dark forests, memories and fantasies. Forbidden thoughts that we have to say out loud. This record could never have been made at any other time than now. And I think you’ll find that it’s exactly what you’ve always wanted,” says Eckerström.

On the tour front, Avatar is as usual in full swing – the band recently returned from a tour with Iron Maiden. The band announced a month-long headline tour in North America for the rest of the year. In February, the band will embark on their own European tour. Next year, Avatar will also perform at four Metallica shows in Germany, Hungary, Ireland and the UK. See all the gig dates here.
